Jury
Finds R.
J. Reynolds Tobacco Company responsible For Death
of A 36 Year Old Mother of 2
On
April 29, 2010 a
Broward County jury found R. J. Reynolds Tobacco
Company responsible for the smoking-related
death of Laura Grossman and awarded the family
almost $2 million dollars. The jury deliberated
for two days before returning the verdict where
they determined that Mrs. Grossman was addicted
to nicotine which caused her to smoke cigarettes
resulting in her early death. She was just 36
years old when she died of lung cancer leaving
behind her husband, an 11 year old daughter
and 2 year old son. One of the most significant
features of this case is that Mrs. Grossman
began smoking around 1974 after warning labels
were placed on cigarette packages. Attorney
Steven J. Hammer, who tried the case along with
Attorney Jonathan Gdanski of the firm, concluded
from the jury’s verdict that “it
seems clear that the message that this jury
is sending is that the cigarette industry is
responsible for the injuries sustained to smokers
regardless of when they began smoking.”
